‘Ansys Academic Programme and Engineering Software Overview’
Martin Haines, Academic Account Manager with ANSYS, will present an overview of the range of software packages available within their Multiphysics Campus Agreement software bundle currently under evaluation at the University. Martin will highlight this range of software packages for simulation & modelling which are applicable across a wide range of engineering disciplines including mechanical, electrical, aerospace and manufacturing. The suite includes tools for optical & photonic design, electromagnetics, finite element analysis for structural and thermal problems, fluids and particle flow and acoustics, plus many more. A full list of products is available here (although not all are included as standard in the Campus Agreement): Engineering Simulation Software | Ansys Products. Martin will be happy to discuss user-requirements and answer questions.
On Tuesday 19th May, 10am, we will be holding a joint seminar between our Devices and Diagnostics Pillar and our AI and Data Engineering Pillar where Prof Simon Dobson (School of Computer Science) will present his latest research “Engineering a Tiny ML system for use off grid”. This meeting will take place in BMS Seminar Room 001.
Simon will discuss building a sensor system for bird classification, the challenges of automating this process for collection, analysis, reporting and communication. Additionally he will also describe the setup of meshtastic mesh networks over LoRa radios and the observations made during this journey..
Monthly Pillar Meetings continuing on bi-monthly format.

Advanced Materials (Physics & Astronomy) Industry day – 28th August 2025.
Where the School of Physics & Astronomy will showcase capabilities around Advanced Materials (organic semiconductors, 2D & Quantum materials, millimetre wavelength, imaging & sensing and nano photonics).
Whilst this may not fit entirely to your research area, it will be an opportunity to engage with industry, networks and stakeholders and consider potential alternative applications and collaborations for your research.
The day will include:
1) Talks from University theme leads, talks from selected companies and talks from external networks/funders.
2) Guided tours of key facilities
3) Plenty of time to network throughout the day.

April Pillar Meetings
Corrour Event On Monday 31st March we will be visited by Charlie Davis, Corrour Estate.
Charlie will give a talk 12-1pm in Jack Cole, Room 1.33A, (Computer Science). Corrour are keen to expand their research and links with the University and Charlie will share their current challenges and interests. These new areas of interest may include but are not limited to: sensing, data collection, software driven applications, improving communication across the estate (the environment is extremely harsh in that area), hydrocapacity and battery storage solutions. As well as continuing interests in sustainability, environmental science and biodiversity.
As part of our Energy and Materials Engineering External Seminars, Dr Cecil K. King’ondu will give a seminar on Thursday April 24th 14:00-15:00 entitled: Upcycling Conventional and Non-conventional Carbon Waste to Functional Materials for Energy Storage and Environmental Remediation.
Cecil is a Future Leaders African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellow and Associate Professor, Department of Chemical and Forensic Sciences at Botswana International University of Science and Technology.
